Canada open WCL Division 2 tournament with big win over Oman
Canada played Oman in their opening match of the WCL Division 2 tournament made the best possible start, are off to an bowling Oman out for just 106 in 27.4 overs, then knocking off the runs in just 15.4 overs for the loss of two wickets.
Canada won the toss and put Oman in. The Canadian bowling was excellent, the pace bowlers Dhindsa, Pervez and Heyliger keeping a disciplined line and length, and supported by attacking fields from captain Nitish Kumar. Only Aqib Illyas (46) provided much resistance. Nikhil Dutta ran through the tail, taking 3/11.
In reply Canada lost Adhihetty for a duck but Gunasekera and Kumar went onto the attack right away, with a rapid 10-over 76 run partnership. Gunasekera made 46 from 44 balls with four sixes before being caught at cover. Nitish Kumar continued to carry the attack to the Omani bowlers and completed his half century and a comprehensive victory with a boundary. He made 53 from 41 balls, and the comprehensive win will help Canada if net run rate comes into play later in the tournament. Nikhil Dutta was named man of the match.
In other matches, Nepal bowled Namibia out for 138, then had to rely on their final pair for a last over one wicket win. UAE had a big win over Kenya, posting 309/8 and bowling them out for 91.
Canada play UAE tomorrow with a 9:30 am start (2:30 am EST).
