CANADA PROMOTED FROM WORLD CRICKET LEAGUE DIVISION 3 DESPITE LOSS

May 30, 2017

Canada achieved their main objective at the WCL Division 3 tournament in Uganda by qualifying for the final - the top two teams are promoted to Division 2. However they made it hard for themselves, losing to Singapore by two runs. They finished tied with Singapore for 2nd with a 3-2 record, but the tie was broken on net run rate, and good results in previous games kept them in second place overall. They will play Oman in the final tomorrow, with promotion assured.

Bhavindu Adhihetty, getting his first bowl of the tournament, took 3/10, and five other bowlers chipped in with wickets as they bowled out Singapore for 166. In reply, Canada looked to have the game won, needing just 8 with three wickets in hand, but the last three wickets fell for 5 runs, the game ending with a run out. Rizwan Cheema top-scored with a rapid 42, and Navneet Dhaliwal provided middle order stability with 37.

Team Manager Ingleton Liburd quotes via his Facebook feed – ‘Team Canada accomplished its first goal which was to get back to ICC WCL Div 2. The next goal tomorrow is to end the ICC WCL DIV 3 tournament as Champions.
